I recently watched Robert Donat in Hitchcock's The 39 Steps. He was a superb actor capable of making you laugh in the midst of a serious movie. As for contending with a hellbent school or teacher, we chose to homeschool our kids after our daughter's 3rd grade teacher tried to convince us that she was exhibiting petit mal seizures, would probably need to be put on medication, and might be put in a learning disabled class. I was initially alarmed enough to have her examined by a neurologist who scoffed (and cursed!) at the notion of a teacher trying to diagnose a child, and he put our minds at ease. Our daughter was simply not "into" what the teacher had to peddle and was fond of daydreaming during class. This was back in 1990 so the war on our kids has been waged for quite some time now.
I had to stop reading this post as soon as I saw the words, The Winslow Boy.
I ADORE the one with Jeremy Northam, esp the last comment in the last scene.
True confession: I once played hooky from “an important cultural experience” my husband had scheduled as part of a family summer vacation in South Dakota. This was because none of my other family members wanted to watch The Winslow Boy with me and, by golly, it was my summer vacation too😉.
I got "The Winslow Boy" (the new version) after seeing it on a list of "Best Conservative Themed Movies" at least 15 years ago. It sounded interesting, so I got the DVD, and I was really pleasantly surprised with the film. :)
Gonna have to check it out / I was struck more by the vignette of your parents sticking up for you. Two times my dad did that - once in school (I was suspended for poking a kid with a sharp pencil - we were fighting for the “comfortable chair!”). Dad decided I’d work it off as the principal saw fit and made sure not to take me home. He stood up for me to have consequences but not a “free one.” I’m GenX and we were latchkey kids. The other time was when I got busted at 12 for stealing cigarettes. He made sure I stayed in a jail cell until he came to pick me up - believe me I woulda rather stayed in jail than face the wrath of 6’3” Marine Korean War veteran dad. After he picked me up there was no belt, just kind words and he even said if I wanted to smoke I could smoke with him. Lesson learned. Respect given and earned. I’m looking forward to watching this movie now!
And David Mamet books Recessional and the Secret Knowledge were great. Saw several of his interviews with Tucker, I believe, several years ago and I’ve been following the crumbs on different things and looked up his books. So they were just very entertaining and he has a great way of putting things in these times
I haven't seen the David Mamet version of the Winslow boy, but in my movie going experience, there is never anything better than the original. I remember some other actress playing Audrey Hepburn's role in Sabrina and no one can out do Audrey hepburn. Also Robert died much too young and was a great actor. I saw that original one rather recently but you reminded me how good it was so I'll see if I can find it streaming for free.
I did not know that Round Rock ISD was in the news again. So disappointing. We raised our kids in RRISD and while not everything about it was rosy, we were pleased. I even helped with the campaign of one of the current school board members because she was a neighbor that I had known and trusted for truth and transparency. It makes me sick.
I had no idea that Robert Donat died so young or that he was in The Inn Of the Sixth Happiness. It’s been many years since I’ve seen it but I loved that movie. I’m going to have to watch it again soon.
I found the original The Winslow boy on line for free. . . I had seen it years ago when I had no idea how pertinent it would be in 2023. There is one line that really struck home . Sir Robert questioned a handwriting "expert" who had lost a previous murder case due to HIS incompetence. He claimed that he lost the case because "the jurors were idiots" - Idiots in 2023 are now "deplorables" Sadly, it appears we have no Sir Robert Morgan to turn to in 2023.

Love that George Strait song. 😍
